I don't know '86 very well, so I was a shade reluctant to put this AUD on the hi-fi today. To my surprise, the first two numbers are fantastic. The Box

of Rain opener finds Phil in fine vocal form (maybe in response to the positively joyous crowd), and Visions of Johanna as the second song of the night is a treat. Jer stumbles with the lyrics, but he gets through it and makes up for any misgivings with tasty guitar work. The version of Bird Song in this set sounds very good. Jer tears his solo up, even getting a little fanning in. Those chirp samples mentioned by a reviewer below are also present in some '85 shows. (By the way, is that Garcia triggering a sample or Healy having some fun?) The first sign of Brent's ‘condition’ is in the harmonies of Bird Song. He's way out of tune and totally off tempo, holding his note at the end a chorus for a full second longer than everyone else. His turn during Rooster is funny at first, but sad in the end. He sounds completely out of it. Vocally, Brent drops back for the rest of this show until the Brokedown encore when his shit-faced harmonies resurface. (Makes me wonder if Bob and Jer, based on Brent's state, didn’t veto any tunes that featured vocal harmonies or emphasized Brent in anyway until the obligatory Brokedown closer of the four night run reared its head.)
This is a weird show in that the first set is much stronger and much more interesting than the second. The second set, however, still repays a listen. China>Rider gets the job done, with Bob exaggerating his parts to comical yet frightening effect. I'm a Terrapin fan, and this version is a solid one, above average as 80s cosmic turtles go. Spoonful is a nice surprise out of space, but the rough transition from Throwing Stones into Black Peter takes the energy down a notch. Lovelight, of course, reintroduces some spunk (listen to the crowd eat it up!) but this show isn't a very smooth ride. One of the things I listen for in a good show is what I call "mood" and this show struggles to latch on to one.
I was tempted to give this show three stars, but the quality of the recording brings it up to four.

Yes, Brent is out of control wasted. But his playing is oddly wonderful throughout. It's little things, like the little keyboard flourish just before

the Box opener than make you feel, "this is cool." And he seems to be up to the task on the B3 on Deal, too. Finally, this is the best Brent break in Rooster EVER. If you're not falling out of your chair laughing hysterically, you have no sense of humor.
But, again, WHERE IS THE CRISP SBD (we know it's out there)? ;-)

he is drunk off his ass during this show!
I'm surprised the boys let him on in this condition.
check out the Guitar Work in BirdSong, Jerry produces some ... bird chirping noises then samples them back. (heard this in a couple of other shows too)
thankyou

Box of Visions to open - wow! Like Fez, I am wondering where the board copy is at. I also taped the show , so I cannot comment on the quality of this AUD.
